Description: A shrub, sometimes thicket forming, locally abundant on damp sandy soil along streams and rivers. Easily identified by the long, very narrow leaves with a few tiny teeth scattered along the margin. Leaves are sometimes browsed by white-tailed deer and some livestock. Can be planted from root-stock or cuttings for erosion control. Native Americans used the bark and stems to make baskets and chewed the twigs as a pain reliever. Contains salicylic acid, similar to aspirin (synthesized acetylsalicylic acid).
