Description:
A shrub to small tree with a broad open crown found in bottomlands and uplands mainly in the eastern portion of our region. Common in forest understory and upland slopes. Twigs are sparsely armed with straight spines. The Latin name spathulata describes the spoon-shaped leaves. Flowers and fruits are small.
