Description: A small tree with a rounded crown occurring along streams and in open uplands in the central portion of our region eastward. May form thickets. Twigs are equipped with long, slender spines. The leaves are spoon-shaped. Often planted in wildlife plantings, hedge rows and as an ornamental. The distinctly long spines and shiny dark green leaves without lobes are recognizable characteristics.
