Description: A common forage grass in the central and northern United States and occasionally found in our region. It tends to prefer shaded, fertile sites and is preferred by livestock. It is sometimes seeded in pastures. The spikelets of the inflorescence are tightly clustered on one side of its branches. Forage may be of fair value to some wildlife species in late winter and early spring.
