Characteristics: Native, perennial, cool season forb to 2.0 feet. Stems 4-angled, usually erect, usually simple but sometimes branched, 1-several originating from base; leaves usually in whorls of 4 (sometimes 6), simple, often with hairs (especially below and on veins); inflorescences usually simple or with 1 or 2 widely spreading forks; flowers mostly sessile or on very short pedicels; fruits mostly sessile or on very short pedicels, bristly. Flowers April-October.
Plant community type: Primarily found in wooded uplands.
