Seasons of significant use: summer (for Croton spp. complex)

Characteristics: Native, annual, warm season, forb to 1.75 feet. Plant monecious; stem usually profusely branched; leaves alternate, simple, hairy, and usually less than 1.5 inches; male and female flowers in terminal racemes; fruit is ovoid capsule, 1-seeded. Flowers June-October.

Plant community type: Open uplands and bottomlands. Frequent in calcareous soils. Often found where there has been soil disturbance (e.g., plowed fields, roadsides, overgrazing, etc.).
