Hunting a Trophy Buck?

Ever wonder where you would have the best opportunity to harvest a trophy whitetail in Oklahoma? The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) has maintained a record of trophy bucks called the Cy Curtis Awards Program since 1975. To be listed, a rack must have an official Boone and Crockett (B & C) score of 135 typical or 150 non-typical.

I analyzed the past ten years (1991-2000) of Cy Curtis listings by county. By adding the total scores of all the entries (typical and non-typical) during this period from each county and then dividing the total by the land area of the county, I concluded the results shown in the table. The highest ranked counties are highlighted in the map.

This data only includes those bucks which were submitted in the voluntary awards program. Factors, such as regional differences in hunter interest in listing their trophies in the Cy Curtis program or the availability of official scorers, could bias the data.

Every county in the state has Cy Curtis listings. Trophy bucks can occur anywhere the factors of sufficient age, nutrition and genetics come together. This can occur by chance, but the odds are improved with careful management. Contact us if we can be of assistance with your management.

I would like to extend my thanks to the ODWC for provision of their data.
