Description:
A small tree or shrub found on a variety of sites mainly in the western portion of our region. Locally abundant in other areas. Twigs are sparsely spined. Can be an invasive shrub on poorly managed rangeland. Mesquite is a legume and the fruit, stems and foliage are sometimes eaten by wildlife and livestock. Smoke from the wood provides a good flavor to smoked or grilled food. The wood can be used to make furniture and flooring.
