Description:
A large shrub with stiff branches or sometimes small tree occurring in the understory of forests on dry sandy and rocky uplands. The bark is thin and scaly, shredding into large plates and is reddish brown in color. The fruits are shiny black when mature in the fall, and may remain attached into winter. Mature fruit is eaten by many species of birds and some mammals and can be consumed by humans as well. The wood is dense and hard.
