Description: A large tree with an open, irregular crown and a large straight trunk common on wet soil along streams and rivers in the central portion of our region eastward. The bark is smooth or flaky, often mottled white, tan and green. A fairly durable wood used for everything from butcher blocks to pulpwood. Often used by turkeys as a roost tree, especially near streams because of its open canopy with heavy limbs. Sometimes planted as an ornamental.
