Terrorism — Army Colonel Speaks on the Danger

ARDMORE — Terrorism is becoming a common news topic around the world. Southern Oklahomans and north Texans have the opportunity to learn more about how to cope with terrorism and keep a positive mental attitude from a former terrorist hostage himself, retired Col Chuck Scott.

As a military intelligence expert and authority on the Middle East, Col. Scott spent most of his three-decade military career developing strategy to combat terrorism. Then, he was taken hostage in the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iraq, in 1979. For 444 days, he was held with 50 other American hostages before the hostages were released.

Scott, now retired, will present a public program at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Plainview School Auditorium, 1140 S. Plainview Road in Ardmore. His is the second presentation of the 2002-2003 Profiles and Perspectives community enrichment programs sponsored by The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc. All Profiles programs are free to the public.

Scott emerged from the ordeal not only physically intact, but mentally fit as well. He will share his personal hostage experience and the abilities developed to survive it, as well as the special insight he gained into the minds of the terrorists.

He retired from the Army as a full colonel in 1981 after more than 31 years in the military. He received numerous honors, including the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star and the Bronze Star.
