Many Topics Make
June 3 NF Field Day Special
ARDMORE - Horticulturists,
city officials, county Extension agents, and other specialists will be providing
information on various topic areas during this year's annual Noble Foundation
Horticulture Field Day at the foundation in Ardmore Saturday, June 3, from 9
a.m. to noon.
Gardeners, homeowners and
others are invited to attend the event to learn the newest technology and products
available to better cope with a wide range of home gardening, lawn and orchard
projects and problems.
Among the speakers participating
in this year's free public field day are Heatsher Merchant, backyard composting
coordinator for Plano, Texas; horticulturists Steve Upson and Dooly Barlow with
the Noble Foundation, Jim Shrefler with the Wes Watkins Agriculture Research
and Extension Center (Oklahoma State University); and Cleveland County Extension
agent Craig Evans; and J.T. Vogt (OSU) and Warren Roberts, both also with the
Wes Watkins AREC.
Several new topics have
been added to this year's field day, although event participants will again
find lots of free material available and be able to tour NF Horticultural Center
hoop houses, raised bed garden projects, and orchard.
Topics this year include:
home pest control, small fruit production and management, irrigation, hoop house
construction, turfgrass management, fire ant abatement, soil testing, and backyard
composting.
"We think the range of
presenters and subjects to be covered during our field day this year will provide
lots of new information for people throughout Southern Oklahoma," said Steve
Upson, NF coordinator of the event. "Whether they be interested more in gardening,
home improvement, small orchard management, or whatever their growing interest
may be, there should be some presentations to interest just about everyone."
This is the first time
the horticultural event will be held on a weekend and during the day. It also
offers a wider variety of topic choices. "We will be more diversified this year"
than in the past, Upson said.
"We want to show more general
gardening tips."
People can start viewing
the NF Horticulture Center at 8 a.m. with programs starting at 9. Parking is
limited to the Southern Oklahoma Technology Center, 2610 Sam Noble Pkwy., just
east of the foundation. Shuttles will run to the NF Horticulture Center and
back on a regular basis.
