Storyteller
to tell tales and how to tell tales
ARDMORE --Jiaan Powers, a master teacher with 22 years' teaching experience in the public schools, will
bring her love of, expertise in and passion for storytelling to Ardmore September 14.
Powers' presentation, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Thursday,
September 14, at the Southern Oklahoma Technology Center Auditorium in Ardmore, kicks off the 2000-2001
Profiles and Perspectives community enrichment series sponsored by The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation.
A native Texan, Jiaan tells multi-cultural folk
tales, myths and legends, tall tales, literary tales, ghost tales, and snippets from down home. Her
topic for September 14 is "Once Upon a Time,"a presentation designed for the whole family
to enjoy.
"Remember when you were young and you had all
the time in the world, and nothing was better than a good story?" Jiaan asks. "Participants
discover for themselves the benefits of storytelling through listening, partner dialogue, and telling
interactions. 'Once Upon a Time' still lives within stories and can be brought to life within each of
us...happily ever after."
Like all Profiles and Perspectives events, Jiaan's
presentation is free to the public.
"Our goal is to bring to the people of Southern
Oklahoma a variety of quality programs through our Profiles and Perspectives series," explained
Joe Lobell, a member of the committee organizing the event." Jiaan's program is unique in that
it appeals to all age groups, from young children through great-grandparents. WeĠre excited about starting
the year with such an entertaining and informative event."
Jiaan is a member of the
National Storytelling Network, Storytelling Foundation International, Tejas
Storytelling Association, Dallas Storytelling Guild, and Richardson-Plano Storytelling
Guild. Her recent engagements include presentations in New Mexico, Arizona and
throughout Texas.
While in Ardmore, Jiaan
will also be conducting workshops with students on "Animals Talk and Teach...Do
We Listen?" and "Ghost Stories -- Texas Tales...Then and Now."
She will also present an in-service workshop for local teachers.
The next Profiles and Perspectives
Program will be an informative and humorous verbal slugfest between political
pundits Burns Hargis and Mike Turpin set for October 12 at the Goddard Center
in downtown Ardmore. Additional programs in the 2000-2001 series will be announced
at the September 14 event.
