The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has named Noble Foundation scientist, Lloyd Sumner, an AAAS Fellow.

"These individuals have been elevated to this rank because of their efforts toward advancing science or applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished," said AAAS in a released statement.

New fellows were recently recognized at the 2006 AAAS annual meeting in St. Louis. Sumner received an official certificate and a rosette pin, representing science and engineering. Sumner is among 376 new fellows from top universities and research institutions across the nation.

As an associate scientist in the Plant Biology Division, Sumner leads the biological mass spectrometry facility, which serves not only as a basic research laboratory but also as a valuable resource to other Noble Foundation research programs. Sumner's laboratory focuses on the development, advancement and application of leading-edge instrumental techniques for large-scale profiling and the identification of the basic building blocks of living organisms - proteins and metabolites.

"We are pleased that Dr. Sumner was recognized by his peers for his significant work and his efforts to advance plant science," said Michael A. Cawley, president of the Noble Foundation.

Sumner earned a doctorate in analytical chemistry from Oklahoma State University in 1993 and joined the Noble Foundation in 1999.

Founded in 1848, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is the world's largest general scientific society. AAAS includes some 262 affiliated societies and academies of science, serving 10 million individuals. The non-profit AAAS (www.aaas.org) is open to all and fulfills its mission to "advance science and serve society" through initiatives in science policy, international programs and science education.
