'99 Symposium Offers Beef Profit Tips

A wide bevy of topics will be covered by this year's Southern Plains Beef Symposium on Saturday, Aug. 14, but organizers say everything from weather to cattle value are on cattle producers' minds and need to be addressed.

Sponsored by The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation and the Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service, the annual symposium will provide five seminars and a panel discussion titled "Feeders' Perceptions of Cattle Value," as well as a trade show.

"Weather, markets, breeding programs, beef product development and cattle value - what else concerns cattle producers?" asked agricultural economist Fred Schmedt, with the Noble Foundation.

"Probably several things," Schmedt said, "but the lion's share of what impacts cattle producers' profits will be discussed at this year's Southern Plains Beef Symposium. This is arguably one of the most powerful programs to be presented in this region in some time - a can't afford to miss kind of event."

The symposium will be held at the Southern Oklahoma Technology Center east of Ardmore on Sam Noble Parkway (state Highway 199), with registration and refreshments beginning at 8 p.m. and programs beginning at 9 a.m.

Topics include Oklahoma Mesonet and Weather Data Interpretation, Beef Research and Producer Related Quality Issues, Cattle Market Outlook, New Product Development/Meat Export Situation, and Purposeful Design of Cowherd Mating Systems.

The pre-registration fee of $15 a person includes the day-long program as well as a steak lunch, and should be received by the Foundation by Aug. 9. Registration can be mailed to Southern Plains Beef Symposium, c/o The Noble Foundation, PO Box 2180, Ardmore, OK, 73402-2180.

Speakers include Larry Cundiff, research leader of genetics and breeding, US Meat Animal Research Center (Clay Center, Neb.); Wendy Radakovich, marketing manager, US Meat Export Federation (Denver, Colo.); Ernie Davis, professor and Extension economist, Texas A&M University (College Station, Texas); Brad Morgan, assistant professor/meats, Oklahoma State University (Stillwater, Okla.); and Howard Johnson, associate climatologist, Oklahoma Climatological Service (Norman, Okla.).

George Hall, with Oklahoma National Stockyards and president-elect of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, will moderate the panel.

Panelists include Tommy Beall, marketing manager, Continental Grain cattle feeding division (Boulder, Colo.); Paul Colman, vice president and director of customer relations, Cactus Feeders (Cactus, Texas); Byron Gossett, president, Gossetts Inc. (Amarillo, Texas); Bill Robertson, cattle procurement manger, Caprock Industries (Amarillo, Texas); and Bob Sims, president, Tri-State Cattle Feeders (Hereford, Texas).

Door prizes, including collector's knives and cash, will be awarded throughout the day.

Eleven vendors, offering from animal health supplies to credit services, are scheduled to set up booths for the trade show during the symposium.
