New Speakers Featured for NF Field Day

ARDMORE, Okla. — Three new speakers will lend their expertise in a variety of areas to the knowledge base of the presenters at the annual Noble Foundation Horticulture Field Day on Saturday, June 2.

The free presentations take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the NF Horticulture Center, and include time for the presenters to answer individual questions from participants. Free parking will be offered at the Southern Oklahoma Technology Center, 2610 Sam Noble Pkwy., east of Ardmore on state Highway 199.
Shuttles will be operating throughout the morning to take people to and from the presentation sites.

Mike Schnelle, an ornamental floriculture specialist with the Oklahoma State University Extension Service in Stillwater, will discuss growing "cut" flowers; Al Sutherland, an area horticulture agent with the OSU Extension Service will discuss fertilization and composting for the gardener and homeowner, and Leland McDaniel, Carter County Extension agent, will discuss residential fire ant control.

"Once again, we’ve gathered an outstanding group of specialists to discuss various topics at the field day," said co-coordinator Steve Upson, a Noble Foundation horticulturist in the Agricultural Division. "With eight different topic areas being offered, there should be lots of interesting information for just about anyone."

"This is a unique opportunity for such a diverse group of specialists to share ideas with the Southern Oklahoma people," said Dooly Barlow, event co-coordinator and also an NF horticulturist.

Other speakers and their topics included in the field day are Wes Lee, Murray County Extension agent — landscape and garden pest control; Dave Gerken, OSU/Oklahoma City Horticulture Department instructor — turfgrass management for lawns; Scott Landgraf, NF pecan and irrigation specialist — landscape and garden drip irrigation techniques; Dooly Barlow, NF horticulturist — small orchard management; and Upson, speaking on the latest developments in hoop house and raised bed gardening.

Upson said the format of the field day will be a little different this year. Instead of traveling to eight different speakers’ presentation areas, they will be grouped to talk in four areas, thus reducing the amount of time spent walking from one site to the next.

The educational programs will be conducted from 9 to 11 a.m., with the last hour reserved for questions, closer display viewing, and touring the horticulture center, depending on the wishes of the participant.

"We felt that twelve minutes of focused speaking is plenty of time to get the basics in the different topics across," Upson said. "Then they can go back to the speakers with the topics they were most interested in and get additional or more specific information."

As in past NF horticulture events, Upson said there will be lots of free handouts available for the taking.
