Certain security issues are affecting agricultural producers' ability to buy and use the fertilizer ammonium nitrate. "The problem with ammonium nitrate, in the minds of legislators and regulators,
is that it can be used to make a powerful explosive," said Eddie Funderburg,
a soil and crops specialist at the Noble Foundation. "This is not recently
discovered knowledge. Ammonium nitrate has been used for this purpose for many
years, and it is commonly used as an explosive in the construction industry." "Opponents of the bill say the taggants would add to the cost of the product
and offer little benefit," Funderburg said. "Also, there are some
environmental concerns that the taggants would get into the food chain through
the fertilizer." "The bottom line is that some port facilities have decided to discontinue
handling ammonium nitrate, and some barge lines have decided to discontinue
shipping the product due to the increased cost and liability," Funderburg
said. "We need to wait and see what effect the above processes have on the availability
and price of ammonium nitrate in your area," Funderburg said. "For
specific fertilizer recommendations for your operation, contact a Noble Foundation
soil and crops specialist at (580) 224-6500." ### The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, headquartered in Ardmore, Okla., is a non-profit organization conducting agricultural, forage improvement, and plant biology research; providing grants to numerous non-profit charitable, educational and health organizations; and assisting farmers and ranchers through educational and consultative agricultural programs.
