State Labor Commissioner to Present Safety Award to Noble Foundation

ARDMORE, Okla. — Occupational safety and health are a top priority at the Noble Foundation, and the Foundation is being recognized for its efforts in those areas. The Foundation has met the requirements for the U.S. Department of Labor-Occupational Safety & Health Administration's (OSHA) Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP).

The program was designed to encourage and recognize excellence in occupational safety and health, and SHARP certification exempts a small business from OSHA's general scheduled inspections for two years.

"Achieving SHARP status was a year-long process that included several days of safety inspections and interviews by state OSHA consultants," said Robert Williams, the Foundation's safety manager. "A scoring system is used to evaluate programs, management and employee participation. We scored 166 out of a possible 174 on their evaluation."

In addition to the scoring system, Williams added, the Foundation's accident statistics had to be below the industry average.

"If our rates for OSHA recordable accidents or accidents involving days away from work or restricted duty were above the averages in our industry, we would not have received SHARP," he explained.

Oklahoma Labor Commissioner Brenda Reneau Wynn will be at the Foundation at 10 a.m. on Sept. 30 to present the SHARP award. Her visit will coincide with the Foundation's second Annual Health and Safety Fair, a half-day event where employees can get information and screenings from health and safety-related vendors.

"Our SHARP status includes us in a small group of employers in the state who set the standard for safety excellence," Williams said.
