Michael
A. Cawley, president of The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Ardmore, Oklahoma,
has been appointed to the board of directors of the National Center for Genome
Resources (NCGR), Santa Fe, N.M.
NCGR is a nonprofit life sciences research institute that seeks to combine
and translate research in bioscience, computing and mathematics into improvements
affecting the treatment of infectious diseases, global health, and nutrition.
The objectives of NCGR are to improve diagnosis, control and cure of infectious
disease, better nutrition and food safety.
In addition to the appointment of Cawley, the NCGR board further added the
following directors:
- Donald Armstrong, M.D., member emeritus, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer
Center, New York.
- Charles J. Arntzen, Ph.D., co-director of the Center for Infectious Diseases
& Vaccinology, The Biodesign Center, Arizona State University, Tempe,
Ariz.
- William Beavis, Ph.D., chief scientific officer, NCGR.
- Mark B. Chandler, Ph.D., chairman and CEO, Biophysical Corp., Austin, Texas.
- Keith A. Joiner, M.D., M.P.H., dean, College of Medicine, University of
Arizona, Tucson, Ariz.
- Stuart A. Kauffman, M.D., director, Institute for Biocomplexity and Informatics,
University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
- Stephen F. Kingsmore, M.B., Ch.B. (ex officio), president & CEO, NCGR.
- Teresa I. Leger de Fernandez, J.D., managing partner, Nordhaus Law Firm

- C. Rick Lyons, M.D., Ph.D., director, Center for Infectious Disease and

directors. All have many years of experience in business, science or senior
management with prestigious institutions or highly successful companies. They
will add breadth and depth to our board that will help us take our organization
to the next level,” said Dr. Mary F. Lipscomb, board member and newly
appointed board chairperson.
Cawley has served as the president of the Noble Foundation since 1992.
