The concept of an ecosystem-based biodiversity inventory of viruses was addressed at a workshop convened by Dr. Marilyn Roossinck of the Noble Foundation in June of 1997 . The workshop was attended by virologists and ecologists with expertise in most, but not all, of the major host groups that will be included in the inventory. A steering committee was developed, comprised of individuals who attended the workshop.
