The functions of macromolecules such as proteins are determined by their three dimensional structures. To obtain structural data is very important for us to understand the structure and function relationship of proteins. Structure of a plant uridine diphosphate glycosyltransferase (UGT) solved in our lab revealed how enzyme (ribbon) interacts with a sugar donor UDP-glucose (UPG) and where an acceptor substrate (Hederagenin) would bind, and provides a basis for understanding the catalytic mechanism for glycosyl transfer.
