The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation seeks a postdoctoral fellow with a degree in plant molecular biology, biochemistry, or related science to execute a project focused on the discovery and elucidation of triterpene saponin biosynthesis in Medicago truncatula using an interdisciplinary approach involving computational, biochemical, genetic and molecular methods. Research will be conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Lloyd W. Sumner in the Plant Biology Division at the Noble Foundation. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in terpenoid biosynthesis, secondary metabolism, metabolic engineering or related fields. Successful completion of a PhD in a relevant science is required. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated, creative-thinker capable of independent thought and research. Strong communications skills, analytical skills, and advanced knowledge of plant primary and secondary metabolism are highly advantageous.

Job Description
  Job Summary

To perform research as directed by the supervising Staff Scientist in line with Divisional goals.

Essential Duties - 100%

Laboratory research as required by supervisor.

To stay abreast of current scientific literature in relevant research areas.

To communicate his/her research in scientific publications, and to attend regional, national and international scientific meetings in order to present research data and promote the name and reputation of the Division

To provide written reports of progress annually or as requested by supervising staff scientist.

To maintain laboratory notebook in a manner consistent with patent requirements.

To promote free discussion, research progress, skills, productivity and morale within the group and Division.

Secondary Duties

Related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Education: Ph.D. in a subject relevant to the research project being addressed

Experience: Experience in biochemical, genetic, and molecular biological methods. Computer skills essential.

OTHER SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Ability to initiate and follow through on scientific projects with little or no supervision. Good mechanical and chemical safety knowledge. Understanding of a broad range of biochemical and molecular biological techniques and ability to connect and apply them in the lab.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The requirements below refer to regular, daily activities.

Physical Requirements

Lifting & Carrying: Must be able to lift heavy rotors in and out of centrifuges (30 lbs). Must be able to lift boxes out of chest freezers. Must be able to carry boxes of chemicals and/or trays of culture flasks around Plant Biology building.

Pushing & Pulling: Must be able to push trolleys full of lab equipment/experimental materials (100-200 lbs). Must be able to open freezer and refrigerator doors.

Body Positions: Standing for a long period of time at the laboratory bench or in the cold room. Walking between equipment stations. Sitting at desk.

Body Movements: Reaching to retrieve chemicals from storage shelves. Stooping to knee level to access floor shakers.

Hand Use: Must be able to manipulate micropipettes.

Sense of Touch: Advantageous, but not absolutely essential. Hot vs. cold - very helpful.

Hearing: Must be able to hear equipment alarms and follow discussions in seminars.

Vision: Vision is essential

Mental Requirements:

Mathematics: College level arithmetic and algebra. Job requires relatively complex calculations. Working knowledge of IBM or Mac applications such as: Word processing, spreadsheets, and graphics programs.

Remembering: Essential

Language ability: Must have good skills in spoken and written English. Ability to communicate research is essential for the job..

Reasoning: Ability to review information and suggest research plans to supervisor is essential.

Other Requirements:

Good interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Patience, tolerance and ability to maintain morale are important.
