Forage Breeding Lab

Research

Bouton's research centers on breeding and genetics of temperate forage species for use in pasture and livestock systems. The main goal is to develop commercially viable cultivars of benefit to farmers and ranchers in the southern region. He also is confident that an improved cultivar will have value in other similar geographic areas of the world.

Bouton and his researchers are currently determining, in collaboration with University of Georgia (UGA) scientists, the agronomic performance, commercial potential and breeding value of advanced experimentals of alfalfa, red clover, white clover, switchgrass and tall fescue from Bouton's former breeding program at UGA. The ability to transition this material into the southern Great Plains via replicated small plot field testing, controlled animal performance trails and farmer demonstrations will allow use of the material either directly as an improved cultivar or parental material for future Forage Improvement Division breeding programs.
