Scientific names: Quercus muhlenbergii (Q. brayi, Q. muehlenbergii, Q. prinus)
Seasons of significant use: spring, summer, fall, winter (for Quercus spp. complex)
Characteristics: Native, perennial tree to 74.0 feet. Bark light gray to grayish brown, thing, broken into narrow loose plates; leaves deciduous, alternate, simple, margin is regularly and coarsely toothed with the teeth often curved upward (not bristle tipped); plants monecious; inflorescences are catkins; fruit s a 1-seeded nut called an acorn, mostly solitary or paired, cup enclosing 33-50% of the nut, maturing the first year in the fall. Flowers April-May.
Plant community type: Can occur in bottomlands and uplands, often along wooded edges. On the study area, occurs primarily in bottomlands, in bottomland-upland transitional zones, and along intermittent streams.
Comments: Leaves pictured in upper left hand corner are on a Q. muhlenbergii log.
