Seasons of significant use: summer (for P. angustifolia-P. mexicana-P. rivularis complex)

Characteristics: Native, perennial, shrub to 10.0 feet, rarely a small tree to 25.0 feet. Often thicket forming. Bark of younger growth has prominent, horizontal corky spots called lenticels; branchlets usually zigzag, may have spines; leaves deciduous alternate, simple, lanceolate, sharply serrate with small glandular teeth, troughlike; inflorescence corymbose, 2-4 flowered, pedicels hairless; flowers before leaves emerge, sepal margin of flowers glandless; fruit is spherical drupe, smooth, red or yellow or red-yellow dotted, 1- seeded, matures May-July. Flowers April-May.

Plant community type: Uplands and bottomlands in open and wooded-open edge situations.
