Characteristics: Introduced, annual, cool season grass to 3.5 feet. Culms erect, thick; inflorescence a dense spike, terminal; spikelets often awned depending on variety, laterally compressed, 2-5 flowered; glumes 3-severalnerved. Flowers March-May depending on variety.
Plant community type: Cultivated for cool season pasture and grain. Sometimes used to overseed open pastureland with perennial warm season grasses.
Comments: Usually does not reseed voluntarily and requires adequate fertilization.
