Scientific names: Dichanthelium oligosanthes (Panicum helleri, P. malacon, P. oligosanthes, P. scribnerianum)
Seasons of significant use: winter (for Dichanthelium spp. complex)
Characteristics: Native, perennial, cool season grass to 3.0 feet. Forms winter rosettes. Spring phase has simple culms and terminal, paniculate inflorescences; late summer or fall phase usually much branched with smaller, axillary, paniculate inflorescences; principle culm blades lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 0.12-0.5 inch wide and 6-20 times longer than wide, usually without hairs; spikelets 0.11-0.16 inch (2.8-4.0 mm) long. Flowers April-June then again in August-October.
Plant community type: Open areas and wooded-open edge situations. Somewhat shade tolerant.
Comments: Discing discourages it during the year discing occurs.
