Seasons of significant use: winter (for Dichanthelium spp. complex)

Characteristics: Native, perennial, cool season grass to 3.0 feet. Forms winter rosettes. Spring phase has simple culms and terminal, paniculate inflorescences; late summer or fall phase usually much branched with smaller, axillary, paniculate inflorescences; leaf blades usually 0.2-0.47 inch wide and 1.96-4.72 inches long; plants with short hairs 0.04-0.08 inch (1-2.1 mm) long or nearly glabrous; spikelets small, 0.06-0.11 inch (1.4-2.8 mm) long. Flowers April-June and then again August-October.

Plant community type: Open areas as well as wooded-open edge situations. Somewhat shade tolerant.

Comments: Does well on sites disturbed during prior years.
