Seasons of significant use: fall, winter (for Bromus spp. complex)

Characteristics: Native, perennial, cool season grass to 4.5 feet. Leaf blades usually glabrous, sometimes with sparse hairs; lower portions of leaf sheaths usually with spreading hairs: inflorescence an open, usually nodding panicle; spikelets with 5-12 florets. Flowers May-June.

Plant community type: Wooded bottomlands. Usually found in moist stream bank situations.

Comments: This species is relatively scarce on the NFWU and probably did not contribute significantly to deer diets. The bulk of the Bromus spp. consumed by deer was probably made up of B. japonicus, B. tectorum, and B. unioloides.
