Characteristics: Native, perennial tree to 60.0 feet but usually much smaller. Bark dark brown to black, rough, deeply fissured and broke into blocklike plates; leaves tardily deciduous, alternate, simple, usually 3-lobed at outer end with bristle tips; margins usually curled toward underside; plants monoecious; inflorescences are catkins; fruit a 1-seeded nut called an acorn, solitary or paired, cup enclosing 33-67% of nut, maturing second year in the fall. Flowers March-April.
Plant community type: Found primarily in uplands.
Comments: Prolific root sprouter.
