Scientific names: Vicia sativa (V. angustifolia)

Seasons of significant use: spring, fall (for Vicia spp. complex)

Characteristics: Introduced, annual, cool season forb. Tems debument, ascending, trailing to twining to climbing, to 3.0 feet long; leaves alternate, pinnately compound, usually with 4-16 leaflets, usually terminating in branched or unbranched tendrils; flowers usually paired but sometimes 1 or 3, in axils of leaves, sessile or nearly so, 0.4-0.6 inch long; fruit is a dehiscent pod, almost round in cross section, dark brown to black at maturity, both halves of pod having a twisted appearance after opening. Flowers May-August.

Plant community type: In open areas. Often occurs along roadsides, ditches, etc.

Comments: Sometimes interseeded into warm pastures to provide some early cool season forage. Reseeds under proper management.
