Scientific names: Croton lindheimerianus
Seasons of significant use: summer (for Croton spp. complex)
Characteristics: Native, annual, warm season, forb to 1.75 feet. Plants monoecious; leaves alternate, simple, covered with dense hairs but less woolly on uppers surface; male and female flowers few in terminal spikelike racmes; female flowers usually with 5 but occasionally 4 sepals; fruit is a subglobose capsule, 3-seeded. Flowers June-October.
Plant community type: Open uplands and bottomlands. Frequent on sandy sites, but does grow in tighter soils. Often found where the soil has been disturbed (e.g., plowed fields, old fields, roadsides, overgrazing, etc.).
