Characteristics: Native, annual, warm season, forb to 1.75 feet. Plants monecious; leaves alternate, simple, slightly hairy, with serrate or toothed margins; male and female flowers together in terminal racemes; fruit is a subglobose capsule, 3-seeded. Flowers June-October.
Plant community type: Open uplands and bottomlands. Does especially well in sandy soils, but does grow in tighter soils. Often found on disturbed soils (e.g., plowed fields, roadsides, overgrazing, etc.).
