Characteristics: Native, annual, warm season forb to 20.0 inches. Leaves alternate, simple, narrowly rhombic to broadly lanceolate with crenate to nearly entire margins; plants monoecious; spikes axillary with both male and female flowers; female flowers subtended by a foliaceous bract; fruit is a 3-seeded capsule. Flowers July-October.

Plant community type: Typically in open uplands but also occurs in open bottomlands and partially shaded areas.
