Weed Wiper This is a pesticide application tool to apply glyphosate, a non-selective herbicide, in a selective way. The tool is covered with an absorbent canvas type material that holds the herbicide solution, then the chemical is applied by being "wiped" onto the weeds. There are three basic types: the Speidel, the rope wick and the Rotowiper type. They come in different sizes and can be mounted in front of, or behind, tractors, four wheelers or other vehicles and can be used in pasture and crops. The Speidel type has canvas wrapped around a PVC pipe. There are small holes drilled in the pipe that allow the solution to trickle or be "wicked" out onto the canvas. This is the simplest of the three. The rope type is similar to the Speidel type but has overlapping segments of cotton rope plumbed into the pipe. The rope "wicks" the solution out of the pipe. The Rotowiper is more complex. It has a carpet-covered drum that counter-rotates. It also has a separate spray tank and shielded boom mounted above the drum. The chemical solution is delivered by being sprayed onto the carpet-covered drum which then "wipes" the weeds. Pictured are a Rotowiper pulled behind a four wheeler and a Speidel mounted to the loader on a tractor. For more information see www.noble.org/Ag/Soils/WeedWiper/index.htm
