Offset Disk This implement is a primary tillage tool, i.e., one used for the first pass over a field. It opens the ground and turns over the soil, much like a moldboard plow or chisel plow. It is useful for working the soil deeply, cutting and burying residue, working very rough ground and working very hard ground. It is often used when new ground is cleared to cut roots, sticks and other trash. Its construction is similar to a tandem disk, but there are some differences. The disks are generally fluted with notches and larger than on a tandem disk. The flute or notch allows the disk to "bite" the ground better and the larger disks are heavier so they can cut better and deeper. Also, there is only a single gang of disks on the front and a single gang on the back, unlike the tandem gangs on the tandem disk. The front and back gangs are "offset" from each other, giving this disk its name. These pictures are of a pull-type offset disk, which is typical, but smaller ones are made in three-point mounted models.
