Noble Foundation Agricultural Guidelines for May

Economics
 • Record operating income and expenses.
• Prepare inventory and record all cattle deaths, purchases, sales and movements among pastures.
• Monitor monthly and year-to-date cash flow and compare actual income and expenses to the budget.
• Review marketing plan for winter stocker enterprise.
• Evaluate cost of alternative nitrogen sources for summer forage production.

Forage
 • Start hay harvests for quality forage. Analyze hay samples for crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) from each cutting.
• Seed warm-season annuals for supplemental forage, as needed.
• Finish seeding warm-season perennial grasses.
• Clip seed heads to prevent seed head formation on fescue and to control weeds, as needed.
• Consider herbicide options for weed and brush control.
• Monitor and record pasture rotations for proper graze and rest periods.

Horticulture
 • Monitor nutlets for casebearer eggs. Apply spray when most of the eggs are showing pink and beginning to hatch.

Livestock-Cattle
 • Provide free-choice mineral supplement; monitor consumption. Include chlortetracycline, if needed, for control of anaplasmosis. CTC should be consumed at the rate of 500 to 700 mg/cow/day.
• Initiate fly control program. Consider using a combination mineral feeder/fly wipe tool as outlined in NF publication #NF-FO-02-03.

Summer Stockers
• Monitor health of stockers; treat according to your written herd health protocol.

Winter Stockers
• Ship stockers. Ensure that shrink is minimized and all withdrawal periods are cleared.

Soils
 • Collect soil samples.
• Complete fertilization of warm-season perennial pastures.
• Spray herbicides, if needed, on summer pastures.
• Apply lime, if recommended by soil test.

Wildlife
 • Evaluate fish populations in ponds with hook-and-line surveys.
• Plant summer food plots, if appropriate.
• Monitor bird nest boxes.
• Stock fish, if needed.
• Advertise hunting leases that are available.
• If aquatic vegetation is being managed with herbicide, apply chemical treatments.
