Common names: grapes
Scientific names: Vitis spp.
Seasons of significant use: spring
Characteristics: Native, perennial, high climbing (by tendrils), woody vine or viny shrub. Bark of old stems usually exfoliating in shreds; tendrils branched; leaves alternate, simple, variable in shape, usually hairless on lower surface with some exception along the ribs; plants primarily dioecious but occasionally having some bisexual flowers; fruit is a berry, with pear-shaped seed, maturing July-October. Flowers May-July.
Plant community type: Primarily along wooded edges and fencerows, etc. but also found in wooded situations. Both uplands and bottomlands depending on species.
Comments: Species of the genus Vitis hybridize readily and most experts consider it very difficult distinguish between species, especially members of the genus Vitis on a multi-species level, giving characteristics that are common to all members of Vitis spp. that were found on the study area. It should be stated here that various species of this genus have been identified in white-tailed deer diets in other regions, so it is logical to assume that Vitis spp. is generally important where it occurs and most likely is not limited to the species that possess the aforementioned characteristics.
