Seasons of significant use: summer (for P. angustifolia-P. mexicana-P. rivularis complex)

Characteristics: Native, perennial shrub to 9.0 feet. Often thicket forming. Bark thin with prominent, horizontal, corky spots called lenticels; leaves deciduous, alternate (sometimes appearing to be clustered), simple, usually troughlike, margins serrate and glandular; inflorescence solitary or 2-8 flowered corymbose cluster; flowers with or before leaves emerge, sepal margins of flower glandular; fruit is spherical drupe, smooth, 1-seeded, yellow-orange to red at maturity, matures July-September. Flowers April-May.

Plant community type: On well drained moist sites in the sun.
