Seasons of significant use: spring, fall

Characteristics: Native, perennial, cool season forb. Stems mostly decumbent, to 2.5 feet; leaves alternate, simple, round in overall outline, usually 5-7 cleft to palmately parted (the segments may be variously toothed or incised, etc.); flowers solitary, conspicuous, and subtended by a 3-bracted involucel not noticeably separated from the calyx. Flowers February-August.

Plant community type: Open uplands and bottomlands, as well as wooded-open edge situations. Frequently found on disturbed sites such as mowed areas, roadsides, bulldozer windrows, etc.
